How often should I change my air filter?

dirtyairfilterChanging out your air filter is the MOST important thing you can do as a homeowner to protect and get the best use of your cooling system. The number one question we get is, “How often should my air filter be changed?”

The best answer seems to be –  WHEN IT IS DIRTY.  Well, duh! 🙂  But how do you know when it is dirty? Visual inspection is the key.

There are lots of factors that determine when the filter should be changed.   How many people live in the house, how many pets and what kinds of pets, anyone have allergies?  Are you doing home improvement projects or anything that might stir up more dust and particles?  The best bet is to check it at least once a month.

It may not need to be changed – but get into the regular habit of checking.  Add a reminder to your calendar – be it digital or analog – that will pop up to draw it to your attention.  Also – make a note of when it was last changed and, as long as the factors in your home remain fairly constant (ie not embarking on a complete kitchen remodel or deciding to foster 12 puppies), you will soon learn the timeline for your particular home and family.

HVAC, heating, air conditioning, repair, service, system. houston, sugarland, staffod, bellaire, the woodlands, fort bend, One of the questions we always seem to get this time of year is:

Q. Should I cover my air conditioning system during the winter?

A.  Well, in Texas it may get cold for a bit but we don’t have the heavy snow and ice you see up North.  That said, if you want to protect your system from ice and snow when it does show up, there is really nothing wrong – it will protect the paint job.  The problem comes in remembering to uncover it when the heat comes back.  That CAN damage a system fast.  Leaving your system uncovered is the safest bet.

What the heck does the V in HVAC stand for?

ventilation_passive_houseA lot of people refer to their air conditioner/heater simply as “their AC,” but hear it referred to as HVAC.  What is that all about? HVAC is a common term used in the heating and cooling industry. It stands for “heating, ventilation and air conditioning.”  Those are the three functions combined into most modern heating and cooling units.

The one that confuses people is the V – ventilating.  This often overlook aspect of modern systems is one of the most important.  The system provides ventilation, reduces air infiltration, and maintains pressure relationships between spaces. The means of air delivery and removal from spaces is known as room air distribution.

Without that distribution of air, the heat or cool would not travel.  Air movement is what ultimately makes the entire system work.
